Our Town

Inspired by L.S. Lowry’s crowds and The Lowry’s spirit of performance, this interactive light installation transforms passersby into silhouettes filled with local voices. Each figure becomes part of a living portrait of Salford—celebrating everyone whose presence, movement, and stories give the city its heart.

This artwork taps into a duality: the loneliness and mystery of urban crowds that Lowry once described—“All my people are lonely. Crowds are the most lonely thing of all. Everyone is a stranger to everyone else”—and the potential for connection and expression found in shared public spaces. Here, anonymity becomes invitation: an invitation to move, to engage, to perform.

The piece becomes both stage and storyteller, highlighting the individuals who make up the city, and reminding us that every person carries a story worth telling.
